FROM THE PASTOR
Dear Parishioners,
The Book of Sirach was written in the second century before Christ, yet it is still a book filled with wisdom for our time. Just listen closely to this excerpt from the first reading this weekend, “The fruit of a tree shows the care it has had; so too does one speech disclose the bent of one’s mind. Praise no one before he speaks, for it is then that people are tested.” How appropriate for our own time and place! Think about the things people say on social media and then how some negativity or criticism goes viral. In our days, unfortunately, people often speak before they think. This is especially harmful when it comes from our leadership.
This weekend is a wake up call for all of us to take things in, pray about them, discern where God is, and then speak or act. Doing anything in haste can cause so much chaos, hurt and distress.
Jesus says, “For every tree is known by its own fruit.” We’ve all known people who can talk a good line, but can never produce. In other words, despite all of their words, there is no fruit, much less good fruit. But before we point the fingers out there, let’s make sure that we are good trees that produce good fruit. Let us curb our tongues and think before we speak or text or email. Let us try to build up our world and one another and so produce good fruit.
