Dear Parishioners,
Peter and Paul are the two great apostles of our church. Saint Paul was the apostle to the Gentiles, and Saint Peter was the apostle to the Jewish people. Between the two of them, the church spread throughout all of the Mediterranean region and finally throughout all the world. As we hear in the readings from the Bible this
weekend, both were fearless in the face of great opposition.
In the first reading from the Acts of the Apostles, James has
already been killed. He was the apostle who led the Christian
community in Jerusalem. Peter is in prison, and awaiting trial, when God intervenes by sending an angel to save him. Nothing but the belief in the love of Jesus, his death and his resurrection, could have propelled these two men forward. Paul, formerly known as Saul, had persecuted Christians, and Peter had denied Jesus three times, but here we see a completely opposite picture of these two Saints – – they are courageous, fearless, and
committed.
When we face opposition in our lives, when we doubt our faith, when we feel like we cannot make a difference because we are one person, pray to Saint Peter and Saint Paul for courage, lack of fear, and commitment.
